We’ve long visited historic properties and particularly admire the simple, plain joinery of the downstairs kitchens. The understatement of these rooms still feels timeless and inspires us for how we live today. On a sunny spring day, Merlin Wright, Design Director & Katie Fontana, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Plain English visited the National Trust’s Uppark House & Gardens in Sussex, England with a picnic and the idea to explore the house and grounds. They found a fascinating history (the landscape and the building) and downstairs kitchens still full of relevant details and interesting quirks from which we can learn today.
