Larders and Pantries

Historically these were rooms with different uses; a larder was often a cool area for the storage of foods that needed a lower temperature, from the French, “lard” or bacon was stored in a larder while a pantry was originally used to store bread, named for the French ‘‘pain”. A Plain English larder can be designed with a specific use in mind – a breakfast cupboard with dedicated space for the juicer, toaster, and coffee maker. Door racks for jam and sauces. Once the morning activity is over, the doors close and everything is stored out of sight until the next morning. A larder can be designed as a more general storage space to store jars, tins, packets, and bottles that require easy but enjoy a separate space close to the kitchen. A pantry often indicates a larger space in our projects; they can be walked up to as a sectioned area with no doors, or be rooms you step into behind doors, or divided with our glazed screens and door to take advantage of borrowed light as both a decorative and functional extension of the main kitchen.
